North Kona residents are being asked to continue a 25 percent water use reduction through the end of next week.

North Kona residents are being asked to continue a 25 percent water use reduction through the end of next week.

The restriction went into place earlier this week, when the Department of Water Supply’s Queen Liliuokalani Trust well in North Kona failed. Spokeswoman Kanani Aton said the department is putting a spare pump into the well, and the spare should be in place Friday. Until then, residents placed under the restriction are asked to continue to use less water than usual, Aton said.

Backup water sources stabilized water tank levels, Aton said.

Areas under restriction are: Kaiminani Drive, Hina-Lani Street and upper Palani Road, including all side streets and subdivisions off these roads; Mamalahoa Highway from Keopu Heights to Kona Ocean View/Puukala, including all side streets and subdivisions off these roads; and along Queen Kaahumanu Highway from north of Kealakehe Parkway to Kona International Airport including NELHA, Keahole Ag Park, all commercial/industrial areas, side streets and subdivisions off these roads.

Water spigots off fire hydrants are set up for customers to access water during the emergency in the vicinity of Kealakehe Parkway mauka of West Hawaii Civic Center and at the intersection of Keanalehu Street and Puohulihuli Street above Kealakehe High School.
